Juan José Cabanilles
b. Algernesi (a province of Valencia), September 4,1644
d. Valencia, April 29, 1712
Biography
Not much is known about the musical training of Juan José Cabanilles. He
studied for the priesthood at Valencia Cathedral, probably receiving his music
education there. Cabanilles became organist of the Cathedral in 1665 and was ordained
a priest three years later. Cabanilles is considered the greatest (and certainly
the most prolific) Spanish Baroque composer. He wrote mainly tientos in which
he ingeniously employed variation form.
