Time Classification, and Note and Rest Values

This is the second of three music theory lessons. You may begin this lesson after completing Lesson 3. Music theory lessons should be studied concurrently with technique and registration lessons, and while preparing one of the played assignments.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the organization of rhythm in the practices of traditional music - those of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
  2. Identify symbols (notes) and their relationships to each other.
  3. Describe the symbols for silence (rests) and their relationships in traditional music.

Reading Assignment

Basic Materials in Music Theory

Read chapters 3 and 4. As you study, set a goal to internalize each concept thoroughly. Study first, then work the mastery frames and supplementary assignments as needed.
