Registration: Organ Types and Components (review)

This is the first of six organ registration lessons for Organ Performance Level 2, which should be completed in order. It may be studied concurrently with the first music theory lesson (Lesson 3) and a played assignment. Its concepts will be covered in both the midcourse and the final reviews.

This lesson reviews fundamentals in organ registration that should be learned and applied by every organist. Its concepts will be covered throughout Levels 3 through 6. Thorough study and understanding of these concepts now will bring great benefits as you progress through the higher levels.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define the primary components of the pipe organ.
  2. Describe the characteristic features of the Great, Swell, and Pedal divisions.
  3. Identify the parts of the organ console: manuals and pedals, the stop action, the expression and crescendo pedals, the combination action, and reversibles.
  4. Adjust or modify a bench for proper height.
  5. Describe the basic differences between pipe and digital organs.
  6. Complete Played Assignment 1 before continuing.
