Music Theory: The Basic and Major Scales

This is the second of four music theory lessons for Organ Performance Level 2, which should be completed in order. It may be studied concurrently with a registration lesson and a played assignment. Its concepts will be covered in the midcourse review (but not the final review).

Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the organization of the scale and the relationships of the intervals within each scale.
  2. Describe the basic scales (modes) and their interval relationships.
  3. Identify the pattern of intervals in the major scale and be able to construct a major scale on any pitch.

Reading Assignment

Basic Materials in Music Theory

Study chapters 7 and 8 “The Basic Scales” and “The Major Scale” with the goal of internalizing each concept thoroughly. Study first, then work the mastery frames and supplementary assignments as needed.
