Registration: Classification of Organ Stops by Pitch and by Family (review)

This is the third of six organ registration lessons for Organ Performance Level 2, which should be completed in order. It may be studied concurrently with a music theory lesson and a played assignment. Its concepts will be covered in both the midcourse and the final reviews.

This lesson reviews fundamentals in organ registration that should be learned and applied by every organist. Its concepts will be covered on exams/reviews throughout Levels 3 through 6. Thorough study and understanding of these concepts now will bring great benefits as you progress through the higher levels.

After you have completed Lessons 1 through 6 and Played Assignment 1, proceed to the Preparing for the Midcourse Review section.

Learning Outcomes

1. Interpret and understand the pitch designation and stop nomenclature of speaking organ stops.
2. Distinguish between octave- and unison-sounding stops.
3. Recognize mutations and understand their various functions.
4. Recognize mixtures and be able to employ them appropriately.
5. Distinguish between categories of organ pipes: flue pipes and reed pipes.
