This section covers the specific requirements in this played assignment. For information about the process (preparation, meeting with the Qualified Teacher, etc.), refer to the syllabus under "Preparing for the Three Played Assignments".
Begin preparing for this played assignment by thoroughly learning each of the techniques listed in the following tables. The left-most column identifies each technique you need to master, followed by specific exercises on that technique in four different method books. For each technique, learn the exercise(s) from one of the method books. Another method may be substituted to learn any of the techniques, provided that the exercises are comparable.
While most people practice all the techniques from a single method book, you may draw from two or more if you wish. For example, you might play Thumb Glissando in Organtutor (Thumb Glissando Exercises 1c and 2a-2b) and Finger Crossing in Keeler (p. 11 Exercises 25, 27, and 28).

The pieces may be chosen from within a single volume, but a diversity of musical style is recommended. Other pieces may be substituted with the approval of your teacher. No pieces may be repeated from previous played assignments or levels.

All hymns in this level should be prepared with a sustained legato approach. As described in OrganTutor Online under “Listening Skills for Practice,” pay particular attention to precise releases, perfect legato, and independence of line.
To supplement the required study materials for this level, the following books are recommended. They may be helpful in mastering the performance of hymns:
Three simple hymns (easy pedal part, no more than three manual parts) are required for the hymn playing portion of this played assignment - Normal Arrangement, Manual Only, and Complete Hymn (described in detail below). You may choose from the following Hymns published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (free downloads). Other hymns in any hymnbook of comparable scope and difficulty may be substituted.
Hymn 3 | Now Let Us Rejoice |
Hymn 19 | We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet |
Hymn 67 | Glory to God on High |
Hymn 116 | Come, Follow Me |
Hymn 195 | How Great the Wisdom and the Love |
Hymn 294 | Love at Home |
The following chart explains what you should prepare for the hymn-playing portion of this played assignment.
Played Assignment 2 - Hymn Playing Portion | |
---|---|
Normal Arrangement | Play one of the hymns listed above, one verse only, in the normal arrangement (upper three voices on the Great, bass in the Pedal). Use a hymn other than the complete hymn from this played assignment. |
Manual Only | Play one hymn, one verse only, on the Great manual (no pedal). This may duplicate normal-arrangement or complete hymns, but choose a different manual-only hymn for each played assignment. |
Complete Hymn | Play one hymn completely for this played assignment, with no more complexity than for a church service - an introduction and all verses, using a rearrangement of parts and/or a change of registration between verses at least once throughout the hymn. Choose a hymn other than the normal-arrangement hymn (above), and avoid any other "complete hymns" played in these courses. Your teacher will conduct all or part of the hymn, and you should be able to yield to their beat with precision and flexibility. Include the tenor solo technique as described below. Choose a section of a hymn (at least two phrases) where the tenor line has melodic interest. (All of the hymns listed above include such a section except “Love at Home.”) Solo out the tenor part with the left hand (play tenor on a manual with a more prominent [solo] sound, and play soprano and alto on a different manual with a less prominent [accompaniment] sound). Prepare this tenor solo technique in two ways:

The following chart summarizes everything that you should prepare for this played assignment:

Hymn Playing | Play one hymn, one verse only, in the normal arrangement. |

Play one hymn completely. Include with each hymn the tenor solo technique. Your teacher will conduct all or part of the hymn. | |
Sight-reading | No sight-reading is required for Played Assignments 1 and 2. |
