Practice Does Not Make Perfect

But isn't that what you have always been taught? How many times has “Practice Makes Perfect” been used as an encouragement to put in your time? No, it takes more than just practice to “make perfect.” Only one kind of practice will do it--so we must qualify the old saying:

ONLY Perfect Practice Makes Perfect

Some organists never really practice, even though they think they do. Instead of practicing, they just play passages over and over--and sometimes it never gets better! In all that playing, they forget that every repetition of a passage played incorrectly is one more step towards learning a mistake. It will just have to be re-learned correctly later.
