Break It Down--Horizontally

Breaking down a piece “HORIZONTALLY” means to work on single “voice” parts (i.e., soprano, alto, tenor, bass), melody lines, accompaniment (chordal) parts, pedal lines, right-hand parts, or left-hand parts. If the lines you draw are basically horizontal (see green lines), you are "breaking it down horizontally."
