Hymn Preludes

Hymn preludes often fall into the category of non-contrapuntal textures. The melody line appears in one hand (often the right hand), with an accompaniment in the other, and a bass line taken by the feet. The accompaniment often consists of two or more voices that can be thought of as one chord followed by another.

In this type of musical texture, it could be confusing and complex to break down the accompaniment part into two or three horizontal voices. Instead, the tempo should be reduced so that the hand that plays the accompaniment (usually left) might learn to move smoothly from one complete chord to another.

In this case, as in the trio, we observe three parts--right hand, left hand, and pedal--and use the seven-step method to learn the piece.
