Preparing for Performance

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL PREPARATION

Practice is not the only way to prepare for performance. All aspects of daily living have a bearing on how well we perform. Our mental and physical states at the time of the performance should be at their peak. In order to encourage this, do the following:

  • GET PLENTY OF REST. Late practice the night before a performance may cause fatigue, and may lead your subconscious mind to lose confidence.
  • EAT GOOD FOOD. Orange juice is especially good within the hour prior to performing, and high-carbohydrate foods will provide energy when eaten approximately two hours prior. Avoid eating heavily just before you perform.
  • EXERCISE AND THEN RELAX on the day of the performance. Play through your program early in the day, then take a walk or relax in some other way.
