Note Modifications

Repeated Notes in Hymn Playing (continued)

When working with scores especially edited for hymn study that include rests or ties inserted between repeated notes, usually the rests may be eliminated when transferring needed marks to the hymnbook itself. However, the ties should be transferred to the hymnbook.

A more accomplished organist will often “improvise” the addition of ties between repeated notes. Although this is a practical and often effective approach, when she wishes to study the hymn seriously, various approaches to the treatment of the repeated notes will be explored. Writing ties in the score itself is an excellent method of recording the best solution.
