For Voices
The STRUCTURE of the four-part hymn is standard:
- The highest part and the second-highest part are notated on the treble staff.
- The third-highest part is noted on the bass staff (in two-staff
scores) or on a treble staff an octave higher than sung (in
four-staff vocal scores).
- The lowest part is notated on the bass staff.
In a choir or in a part-singing congregation, the DISTRIBUTION OF PARTS is as follows:
- Sopranos sing the highest part.
- Altos sing the second-highest part.
- Tenors sing the third-highest part.
- Basses or baritones sing the lowest part.
