Distribution of Parts

For the Organ--Other Ways

The four parts of a hymn can also be distributed between the manual and pedal keyboards in other ways:

  • tenor solo
  • manual only
  • soprano solo
  • alto up an octave
  • soprano and tenor switch
  • pedal melody

Each of these “creative” hymn-playing techniques has unique strengths and advantages, and can be used for various reasons. However, it is critical to achieve competency in the normal arrangement first.
