By applying phrasing appropriately in both the text and the hymn tune, the congregation is likely to benefit from the hymn-singing experience in at least two ways:
- MEANING. A reading of poetry that includes pauses and inflections at the appropriate points is much more likely to be understood than a breathless reading. The same is true in good hymn playing. If by phrasing according to the text the organist leads even one member of the congregation to understand a new meaning in a hymn text, she has accomplished something important.
- ENCOURAGEMENT. Once the members of a congregation are aware that the organist will be “breathing” with them and with the text that is being sung, their confidence will increase and they may feel encouraged to sing.
