Phrasing the Tune

How can an organist INCREASE the finality or strength of a cadence? There are several ways, which may be used separately or in combination:

  • Cadence before modification (Example 1)
  • LENGTHEN THE BREAK (delay) (Example 2)
  • LENGTHEN THE NOTE FOLLOWING THE CADENCE (prolong) (Example 3)

These two ways to increase the strength of a cadence correspond to two of the three ways of accenting a note: delay and prolong. (The third way is to detach.)
