To Inspire More Singing

16. Use text-directed CHANGES OF REGISTRATION primarily at ends of verses (or between a verse and chorus). However, a change is not necessary following every verse of every hymn.

As described on the previous screen, it can be valuable to let textual images shine through in the registrational plan. But it is unwise to let that plan become too busy. To change registration for every phrase (or even for any single phrase) would probably be over-theatrical, drawing too much attention to itself.

Normally, use changes of registration at the ends of verses and perhaps between verses and refrains. Never feel obliged, however, to make a change after every verse or between every verse and the refrain. Do not hesitate to play two verses without change. Occasionally, you might even play an entire hymn with the same registrational combination throughout.
