Introduction

This lesson focuses on the treatment of repeated notes in hymn playing--learning how to decide when to tie and when not to tie.

We will first deal with the musical effect of tying repeated notes, and then explore the treatment of repeated notes in typical contexts or configurations as they occur in hymns.

A short discussion of the role that repeated-note treatment plays in making music at the organ will conclude the lesson.

NOTE: For a more direct "rules-oriented" approach, see "Repeated Notes" by Richard Elliott in the workbook. For some case studies that serve as a good follow-up for this lesson, see "Repeated Notes, Tying, and Accent in Hymn Playing" in the workbook.
