If the right hand were to play the alto D in this example, it would have to use a thumb glissando or a substitution in order to keep the soprano and alto parts legato.

This example offers a “cleaner” solution by taking the alto D with the left hand. The right hand can then use direct fingering for the remainder of the passage, and the left hand is in position for the tenor D that occurs two beats later.
