There are at least three common applications for the Unison Off:
1. Using a stop or combination an octave higher or lower
than the intended pitch(es).
Suppose that we wanted to use the Swell Prestant 4' as an 8' Prestant.
We would pull the stops listed to the right.
The Swell to Swell 16' would cause the Prestant 4' to sound at 8' pitch. But we would then hear the Prestant at both 4' and 8' pitch. The Swell Unison Off omits the Prestant at its unison pitch (4'), leaving only the effect of the subcoupler--the 8' pitch.
TRY IT: Try the stop combination to the right. If there is no Unison Off on your organ, study this screen carefully and then proceed with the lesson.
