“Moderato con moto” by César Franck

The solo in this piece is written in the soprano range. Since there are no directions indicating otherwise, we will build a solo that will sound at the normal 8' range (that is, we will build from an 8' foundation). The nature of the melody line seems to call for a sustained, reflective treatment. A gentle solo reed or chorus reed used as a solo such as an Oboe 8' could suffice, but in this example we will use the 8' flute and the Sesquialtera II (2 2/3' and 1 3/5').

To allow the melody to be heard clearly, we will use soft 8' foundations in the accompaniment, probably of flute and hybrid tone. To balance the pedal with the accompaniment, we will use soft 16' and 8' stops.

  • Swell (solo): Flute 8', Sesquialtera II (2 2/3', 1 3/5')
  • Great: Gedackt 8' (and Gemshorn 8')
  • Pedal: Subbass 16', Gedackt 8'

Some alternatives:

  • Use a Swell Oboe 8' solo.
  • Use a Great Cromorne 8' solo.
    Great (solo): Cromorne 8'
    Swell: Gedackt 8', Gemshorn 8'
  • Use the tremulant on the solo.
  • Add a 4' flute in the accompaniment.
  • Use flutes 8' (4') and 2 2/3' for the solo.
