“Prelude on 'Deliverance'” by Richard L. Elliott*

The text of this hymn is solemn, and the composer observes this in his choice of a Principal 8' as the solo and a string/celeste combination in the accompaniment. In the pedal is specified a soft 16' stop, coupled to the accompaniment. At the repeat, the solo changes from Principal 8' to flutes 8' and 4'.

  • I (solo): Principal 8' (change to flutes 8', 4' on repeat)
  • II: Voix Celeste 8'
  • Ped: flute 16', Sw. to Ped.

When a composer makes specific registrational indications, as Richard Elliott does in this piece, it is the first responsibility of the performer to try to realize his plan at the organ in question. However, this may not be possible on certain instruments. Some feasible substitutions for this piece follow:

  • Two gentle 8' stops might replace the Voix Celeste
  • A flute and string (or hybrid) 8' might replace the principal
  • If the 8' principal is unsatisfactory, try:

  • --8' solo flute
    --8' and 2 2/3' flutes
    --Soft 8' reed solo
