Solo/Accomp. Contrast

Balance--Timbre (reed solo)

To increase contrast in timbre, use a reed solo against a flue accompaniment. However, reeds are most effective in slower-moving solo lines. A few possible combinations follow, in order from little to moderate contrast in timbre:

Soft 8' string or reed solo with flue accompaniment

  • 8' hybrid or flute accompaniment
  • 8' hybrid and flute accompaniment
  • 8' and 4' hybrid and/or flute accompaniment (Example 1)

Large 8' reed solo with flue accompaniment

  • 8' principal accompaniment
  • 8' foundations accompaniment (Example 2)
  • 8' & 4' foundations accompaniment (Example 3)
  • Full chorus accompaniment
