The Solo

Timbre (continued)

SOFTER solos can also be constructed from any stop combination that can predominate over its accompaniment. These may include combinations made up of only octave-sounding stops, or those that include mutations (that is, they consist of a partial cornet). A few ideas that are in common use follow (from softer to louder):

Octave-sounding stops only:

  • two soft 8' flues
  • 8' and 4' flutes (Example 1)
  • two 8' flues and a 4' stop
  • 8' and 2' flutes (Example 2)
  • 16' and 4' flutes
  • 8' principal and other 8' flues (Example 3)

Including mutations (stops selected from the cornet):

  • 8' and 2 2/3' flutes
  • 8', 4', 2 2/3' flutes
  • 8'. 2 2/3', 1 3/5' flutes (sesquialtera)
    (Example 4)
