As we begin to consider specific combinations of the solo and accompaniment type, an important question deserves consideration at this point:

WHICH MANUAL SHALL I USE FOR THE SOLO? The answer to this question becomes clear only after you have considered a more important question:

WHERE IS THE BEST SOLO STOP OR COMBINATION LOCATED? Even if the composer or editor has specified the manual on the score, you must first answer this question. If a Trompette solo is required, and the only reed is on the Swell, your solo must originate on the Swell--even if the manual indication specifies the Great!
