The Solo

Timbre (continued)

FIRM BUT LESS ASSERTIVE solos result from chorus reeds with or without the support of the principal chorus or cornet, combinations drawn from the principal chorus or other foundations without reeds, or bold cornets. A few ideas that are in common use follow (from softer to louder):

  • All 8' foundations
    --couple the accompaniment
--add one or more 4' stops (Example 1)
  • Chorus reed 8' (Example 2)
    --add principal 4'
--then add 2' stop and mixture OR
    --then add 2 2/3', 1 3/5'
  • Principal 8' and 4' (Example 3)
    --add principal 2'
    --add mixture
    --couple the accompaniment
  • Cornet (8', 4', 2 2/3', 2', 1 3/5') (Example 4)
