Roman Numerals

In addition to the stop nomenclature and pitch designation found on all speaking stops, a Roman numeral, found on certain speaking stops, indicates the number of ranks that are engaged when the stop is pulled. Such stops that control more than one rank of pipes are called COMPOUND STOPS, and typically include:

The term MIXTURE can be confusing. A mixture is a type of stop, like a mutation or an octave-sounding stop is a type of stop. A mixture is not a stop combination. An example of a stop combination is Flutes 8' and 4' in the manual, with Flutes 16' and 8' in the pedal.
