Knees and Ankles

2. MOTION LIMITED

Reducing motion is one of the great “secrets” of good organ playing. You can reduce motion when playing pedal keys in various ways:

  • Keep the soles and the heels of the shoes in contact with the key surface (or very close to it).
  • Use only ankle motion. That is, do not allow the knee to move up and down when playing keys with the toes. Do not lock the ankles.
  • Allow only small knee motion when playing keys with the heels. Heel playing involves the whole leg, whereas toe playing involves only the front part of the foot (the “toe”). When deciding between toe and heel, if other factors are equal, choose the toe.
