Feeling “heavy and light parts” makes these studies easier. The purple highlights to the right indicate legato or “heavy” passages. Where there are spaces between the purple highlights, a break occurs. The green highlights indicate points where one part is legato (“heavy”) while the other is broken (“light”).
Here is a note-by-note account of that process for the first phrase. After the very first notes ar played, both parts break (they both feel “light”). The left hand remains legato (“heavy”) until the first phrase break (yellow highlight). Meanwhile, as the left hand is “heavy,” the pedal has two repeated notes (green highlights). The pedal is “lighter” at those moments.
If you have not already developed a feel for this shifting “heavy-light” relationship, follow along with the paragraph above until you have. Do it now! If you can feel this instead of over-analyzing each situation, organ playing will become much easier for you.
