Each left-hand/pedal study is in two parts, one for the left hand and one for the feet. To BREAK IT DOWN into small pieces for practice is simple.
Break it down VERTICALLY (into sections). Divide each hymn into phrases or half-phrases (see blue numbers--“section markers”). If a phrase is particularly long, divide it into two parts. The last phrase of “Dennis,” for example, might be divided at the midpoint (measure 11).
Break it down HORIZONTALLY (into lines or parts). Each left-hand/pedal study breaks down neatly into two lines: one played by the left hand and the other by the feet. These divisions are highlighted in green to the right.
