Practice Plan

Begin by choosing a three-part hymn setting. Some of these hymns are briefly described below and given as musical examples to the right. Choose an easy one for Hymn Project 2 (they appear in order from easiest to most difficult).

“Blest Be the Tie” (Example 1) keeps the feet mostly “planted,” but the heel is used once in each foot.

“Lord, Dismiss Us with Thy Blessing” (Example 2) is usually limited to two keys (sharps) in the pedal, but includes one pedal “trick” involving the heel. This hymn moves a little more quickly.

“Silent Night” (Example 3) uses a toe-only pedaling on sharps and naturals. (found in Easy Organ Hymn Settings)

“Nearer, My God, to Thee” (Example 4) moves slowly, but the feet change position often.

“Joy to the World” is the most involved of these hymn settings, with rather involved manual and pedal parts. It also moves rather quickly. (no audio example)
