Great-Pedal Enclosed

Some organs include a “Great-Pedal Enclosed” thumb piston or stop. On power up, the Great and Pedal divisions imitate a traditional pipe organ (that is, they are NOT enclosed and are NOT affected by the expression pedal). But when the “Great-Pedal Enclosed” is engaged, the volume of the Great and Pedal is controlled through an expression pedal. On two-manual organs with only one expression pedal, the entire organ is expressed through the Swell expression pedal. On three-manual organs with two expression pedals, the Great and Pedal divisions are normally expressed through the Choir expression pedal.

To try this, pull stops on the Great, Swell, and Pedal. Play notes on the Great and the Pedal while closing and opening the Choir (or Swell) expression pedal. Next, engage the “Great- Pedal Encl” piston or stop and try it again. You should now hear a change of volume.
