Introduction

Solo & Accompaniment Registration

SOLO AND ACCOMPANIMENT is a type of registration that is used when one part (purple highlight) is played on a solo stop or combination on one manual or pedal, and an accompaniment (yellow highlight) is played on a chorus-type registration on another manual. Solo & accompaniment is one of the three primary types of organ registration.

The Term “Solo”

In singing, “solo” refers to a voice that stands out from other voices or from its accompaniment. In organ playing, a “solo” is usually a single part (see purple highlight in the musical example) that stands out from the others. A solo stop or combination is chosen that will render the solo part louder, brighter, or more colorful than the accompaniment.
