A 1 3/5' stop sounds the pitch two octaves and a major third above the key being played. A MAJOR THIRD equals four half steps, NOT including the bottom key but including the top. A major third up from C is: C#, D, D#, E (four half-steps).

This is the seventeenth, the fifth partial or harmonic, and the fourth overtone.

1 3/5' stops are referred to as THIRD-sounding stops; that is, they sound the note name at some third above the key being played (two octaves plus a third).

To locate the sounding pitch:

  • On one manual pull a 1 3/5' stop only and play tenor C. Remember this pitch.
  • To locate the actual sounding pitch: on another manual, pull an 8' stop and play the key two octaves and a major third above, which is three E's above tenor C.
  • This pitch (not necessarily the tone quality) should match the one you hear when you play tenor C with only a 1 3/5' stop pulled.
