Organ Types
The pipe organ is a time-honored musical instrument that uses a combination of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic (air-driven) components. For centuries it has been a custom-made musical instrument. Traditionally each one has been designed, constructed, and installed according to the terms of a contract between the builder and the client. Each organ has been created to fit the needs of the room in which it was to be housed and of those who were to enjoy its music. Where great care has been exercised by the original builders and by those who have maintained them, some organs have survived for centuries.
Today this tradition continues as expert craftsmen in many countries create beautiful custom organs. Some of these instruments are designed to last for generations.
