WORK YOUR PLAN

Easy Pieces

Easy pieces can be broken down into as few as two vertical parts if the horizontal parts need only limited practice. These vertical parts should be small enough that each repetition seems easier than the previous one.

An eight-measure hymn, for example, may be too difficult to sight-read, but may be easy enough that practice of individual voice parts is not needed. In this case, practice the first four-measure phrase at a tempo slow enough to stay in control. After several (six) perfect repetitions can be played in a row, work towards several more repetitions at a slightly faster tempo. Repeat this process until thoroughly learned at a designated tempo. Record the date and tempo.

Repeat the process for the second phrase. After achieving the same standard described above, record the date and tempo. You can then combine the two phrases using the same procedure.
