More Difficult Pieces

To master more difficult pieces, they must be broken down further than in the easier pieces. After breaking them down into vertical parts (single measures, phrases, or larger sections), break them down further into horizontal parts. This means first identifying the natural horizontal divisions, learning them individually, and then learning them in all their combinations (this will be explained more fully in the following screens).

In order to identify the natural horizontal divisions, determine the nature of the parts. This can be demonstrated most clearly in the case of the organ trio or duo, in which the nature of the parts can be described as either two or three single musical lines. In a duo each hand is dedicated to a separate musical line. In a trio the feet play a third line.
