Problems With Independence of Line:
The Freezing Technique

When a break appears in one part, it is easy to let a break appear also in other parts where there should be a smooth connection. This is a problem with independence of line. It is critical that you learn to recognize and eliminate this type of problem!

The freezing technique is a particularly effective way to fix independence problems. To use “freezing,” apply the four F's as follows:

  • FIND the exact point where the problem occurs--where one part breaks and another should not (see green spots to the right), or where one part moves a different direction than the other (see yellow spots).
  • FENCE in the problem spot very tightly--one or two beats before and only one beat after (see blue bracket). (continued)
