Introduction

The nature and quantity of the markings used by an organist in preparing a score for performance is a personal and subjective matter. For various reasons, one organist who requires only a few markings in the score may play just as well as another organist whose score is full of markings.

Generally an organist in the earlier stages of organ study will require more markings. As proficiency and confidence increase, fewer markings may be needed in the score.

The ideas put forward in this lesson represent one approach to marking the score for practice and performance. Most organists develop their own system for marking scores based on a combination of their own ideas and the ideas of others.
