Introduction

Geared towards the needs of the early-level organist, this lesson introduces various types of markings that might be useful in preparing the score for performance.

Too many markings (see example) can be distracting. Fingering and pedaling every note, using complete stop names, or writing out long directions for manual and stop changes can distract one from the process of making music. Consider these:

  • Use only indications that are NECESSARY for a good performance
  • Make all indications in PENCIL to allow for change
  • Lean toward ABBREVIATED, icon-like indications rather than long descriptions.

Note: the use of color-coded markings in this lesson is for clarity and convenience, and is not recommended for use in your score.
