Once the score is ready to accept markings, you should consider general items that will guide your approach to the piece.

BEGIN BY EVALUATING AND MARKING THE TEXT, if present, and then use that evaluation as you consider textual and musical phrasing.

If there is no text, turn your attention directly to an evaluation of the musical phrasing of the piece.
