Text & Phrasing

nATURE OF THE Text

If there is a text that is to be sung with the piece, as in a hymn or a vocal or choral accompaniment, consider first the NATURE OF THE TEXT IN GENERAL. Is it jubilant? Meditative? Direct? Expressive? Decide on a key word or phrase that best describes the nature of the text in general (“Peacefully”).

Next, if there are several verses, observe the NATURE OF EACH INDIVIDUAL VERSE. Underline a key word or phrase for each verse (see words underlined in blue) and for the chorus, if present. Note any contrast in character between the verses, or between the verses and the chorus.

The nature of the text will influence many aspects of your performance, including tempo, treatment of repeated notes, musical phrasing, and registration.
