Touch

A Standard Touch

Touch in organ playing, which is defined as the manner in which two tones are connected, can be classified as legato, non-legato, or staccato.

Most organists recognize LEGATO touch as standard for much hymn playing. This is due to several factors, but primary among them is the fact that congregations, choirs, and soloists sing most hymns legato.

Using legato as a standard in hymn playing is a healthy foundation, and is also useful in playing other organ music. However, accomplished organists will learn other approaches to deal with various situations.
