Touch

Exceptions to the Legato Standard

Certain conditions may call for exceptions to using a legato touch in hymn playing:

  • A reverberant (“live”) ACOUSTICAL ENVIRONMENT may call for a more detached touch.
  • Some jubilant hymns, particularly those in a more CHORDAL STYLE, may benefit from some detachment.
  • Some organists play EARLIER HYMNS in a less legato style.
