Playing Musically

Size of the Phrase Break

As in the repeated-note treatment, some phrase breaks should be large and definite, while others should be smaller.

Use LARGER PHRASE BREAKS (green highlights):

  • where textual and musical breaks line up.
  • between verses.

Large phrase breaks are usually made by lifting all parts together. Of course, larger breaks will create a greater sense of finality.

Listen to verse 1 in the example.
