Independence

Independence Among the Fingers of Each Hand: Three Parts in Two Hands

Finally the two hands are combined, dividing the three parts between them using redistribution. The right hand will normally play the two parts notated in the soprano. The left hand will play the single line that is notated in the bass clef, but will often help the right hand by playing parts of the alto line.

Playing three parts in two hands is required in hymn playing and in many organ pieces. The brief drills offered here will help prepare you for the next skills in the sequence that must be mastered:

  • combining hands and feet
  • four-part manual playing (two parts in two hands)
