The Term “Pedal”

This term can be confusing. “Pedal” is commonly used in the following contexts:

• The pedals
• Expression pedal
• Swell pedal
• Crescendo pedal

There are other contexts, but all uses of the term “Pedal” fall under three categories:

1. Pedal KEYS or division
   “The pedals”
2. EXPRESSION pedals
   “Expression pedal”
   “Swell [expression] pedal”
   “Choir [expression] pedal”
   “Solo [expression] pedal”
3. CRESCENDO pedal

Toe studs are not referred to as pedals.
