The Swell is by definition an enclosed or “expressive” division--its pipework is contained in a swell box. The organist can open or close louvers or “swell shades” of an enclosed division by operating an expression pedal or “swell pedal” at the console. When the toe is pushed forward and the louvers are open, the pipes speak at their normal or full volume. As the heel is pressed forward and the louvers close, the pipes sound progressively softer out in the room.
The Swell EXPRESSION PEDAL is generally located directly above the central E and F of the pedals (tenor E and F).
Characteristic of the Swell division are a flute chorus (secondary to the principal chorus that dominates the Great) and a fiery reed chorus.
