Two-Manual Organ Consoles

Great--UNexpressive Division

The Great division is normally not enclosed. It is, therefore, an “unexpressive” division, and its pipework is normally either exposed or encased, not enclosed. In this case, operating the Swell expression pedal of a pipe organ will not affect the volume of the Great division. However, some ranks of the Great division and the Pedal division are occasionally contained in the Swell box. In addition, Great and Pedal expression is often provided on modern electronic organs.

The main principal chorus, often considered the “backbone” of the organ, is characteristic of the Great division.
