Two-Manual Organ Consoles

Electronic Organ Expression

Two-manual and larger electronic organs make use of expression pedals in various ways.

Electronic organs that imitate a pipe organ most faithfully are equipped with an EXPRESSION PEDAL FOR THE SWELL ONLY that does not affect the volume of the Great. But the single expression pedal of many smaller electronic organs AFFECTS THE ENTIRE ORGAN: Swell, Great, and Pedal divisions.

Other electronic organs provide INDEPENDENT EXPRESSION PEDALS for the various divisions; commonly one for the Swell and another for the Great and Pedal together (see graphic).

SPECIALIZED PISTONS on some electronic instruments allow the function of the expression pedals to change. The “All Swells” piston, for example, enables the volume of all expressive divisions to be adjusted at the same time by operating only the Swell expression pedal.
