The crescendo pedal and the expression pedal both affect the volume of the organ, but they go about it in two very different ways. The crescendo pedal achieves its crescendo by adding stops in a predetermined order until nearly all stops that contribute to the ensemble are engaged.
The crescendo pedal adds stops “blindly”; that is, the stop knobs or tabs are not physically engaged, but are activated “behind the scenes” electrically. As the crescendo pedal is closed, the stops are retired “blindly” in reverse order. When it is fully closed, only the stops that had been physically drawn before operating the crescendo pedal will remain sounding.
